From Ireland To Japan

Having experienced playing and teaching in many different cultures, Michael was able to develop his own unique style.

He started his journey in music by playing the electric guitar. Self-taught, he played in funk and rock bands as a teenager, always keen on writing his own music. After making his way to Japan, he soon started teaching the classical guitar in the high school where he was also working as an English teacher. Falling in love with the new sounds the classical guitar had, he played in small venues around Tokyo in a classical guitar trio, developing his style and writing skills further.

A Masters in Composition and Creative Music Practice was his next venture. Going back to his home country to explore sound in an academic environment for the first time propelled Michael to find new ways of expressing himself, some of which inspired him to start writing for, and improvising with, dancers.
